Welcome, Happy Activists! A Happy Activist is someone who, through kind words and intentional positive actions, strives to make the world a better place. Live Happy invites you to join our #HappyActs movement! On the 20th of each month, we encourage everyone to incorporate kindness into your daily lives by participating in each month’s planned activity. The more who join the #HappyActs movement, the more positive impact we’ll all have on our homes, workplaces and communities. What you think and do matters!
December’s happiness theme is generosity. Whether it’s with your time, money or resources, being generous makes you a happier person. Science says this may be true even if you are only a little bit generous. A study from the University of Zurich found that when people give to others, a little part of our brain lights up providing a “warm glow” feeling. So not only does the person you are giving to feel good, but you will feel better, too. It’s a win-win situation.
Our December Happy Act is to donate or volunteer for an organization or cause. Find something that you feel passionate about, such as helping out at the SPCA or helping to feed the homeless. In 2013, Live Happy reader Nanette Pelletier wanted to fulfill a goal of providing holiday meals to the homeless in Hawaii. With the help of her family, they prepared 18 meals to give out. A few years later, she is serving more than 1,000 homeless with dozens of volunteers. Her giving spirit turned into an outreach helping those in need.
Our December Happy Activist is Andrea Bialk from Illinois. When Andrea isn’t making students happy teaching middle school, she is helping to bring smiles to the faces of mothers and caregivers of hospitalized children. With the help of friends and family, her volunteer organization, Loving Without Limits, raises funds and delivers gift bags to offer caregivers of sick children a little bit happiness and support. These bundles of joy include toiletries, restaurant gift cards, stress-reducing coloring books and more. “We hope these items give a sense of connection, love and strength during their difficult time,” Andrea says.
Tips on giving back:
- Fill the red kettle.
- Give blood and register as an organ donor.
- Donate your gently used items.
- Offer to shovel an elderly neighbor's driveway.
- Give back the gift of song. Go caroling!
- Volunteer at your local library or public elementary school.
- Bake holiday cookies for your neighbors.
